Why has the second coat of TUNGSEAL or MODIFIED OIL blistered, fried or wrinkled?

The problem is predominately associated with Oil based coatings – TUNGSEAL, MODIFIED OIL GLOSS and MODIFIED OIL SATIN and is caused by the premature application of the second coat - that is application of the second coat before the first coat is fully cured.

The effect is similar to that caused by paint stripper, in that solvents in the second coat cause a breakdown between the first coat and the substrate. In some circumstances the first coat takes an abnormally long time to cure - please refer to the question, Why is the first coat taking too long to dry?

Usually time constrains pressure for completion of the job and the second coat is applied before the first coat is sufficiently cured such that it can be sanded to a fine white powder. In some instances the surface of the first coat appears to have cured, however underneath the coat is soft and vulnerable to solvent breakdown from the second coat. Within 30 to 120 minutes blisters will appear, which can only be removed by sanding back to bare timber.
