MODIFIED OIL - GLOSS

A resin modified Oil, providing improved durability over alternative oil finishes, suitable for interior coating of all timber species.  Ideal for coating New Timber Floors suspected of being prone to shrinkage.  Especially suitable for clients concerned of fumes from Polyurethane as only low VOC white spirits is used as the solvent.  Gloss finish.

USES:

  1. Ideal for coating NEW TIMBER FLOORS suspected of being prone to shrinkage. MODIFIED OIL GLOSS will greatly reduce the occurrence of EDGE BONDING.
  2. For clients concerned about exposure to fumes from POLYURETHANES, MODIFIED OIL GLOSS is less likely to cause discomfort because only low VOC WHITE SPIRIT is used as the solvent.
  3. MODIFIED OIL GLOSS is completely compatible with URETHANE COATINGS MODIFIED OIL SATIN and/or TUNGSEAL.

APPLICATION:

  1. Fine sand timber to a smooth finish.  Hardwoods must not be burnished and grain must remain open.  Accordingly, Urethane Coatings recommend nothing finer than 120 grit paper or equivalent is used to finish sanding new hardwood floors or to finish sanding old hardwood floors back to bare timber.  Vacuum thoroughly.  Ensure the timber surface if free from dust, wax or oily substances.
  2. SHAKE WELL and/or STIR THOROUGHLY
  3. The first coat may be either (a) Urethane Coatings TUNGSEAL PENETRATING FIRST COAT or (b) Urethane Coatings TIMBER SEAL.  Apply with a mohair roller, lambswool applicator or brush
  4. Allow 30 to 60 minutes to dry, then lightly sand with a worn 150 mesh screenback and vacuum thoroughly.  If two coats of MODIFIED OIL are to be applied, sanding of the first TUNGSEAL Penetrating Coat or TIMBERSEAL is unnecessary.
  5. Apply the second coat – MODIFIED OIL GLOSS – with a mohair roller, lambswool applicator or brush.
  6. Allow to dry overnight, lightly sand with a worn 150 mesh screenback. NOTE; If the coating does not sand to a fine white powder, leave for another 24 hours.  Some timber species exude oils and antioxidants which severely retard the curing process.
  7. Apply a final coat of MODIFIED OIL GLOSS.
  8. Do not return unused material to the can.
  9. Thoroughly clean the mohair roller, lamb’s wool applicator or brush in URETHANE COATINGS MINERAL TURPENTINE.  Dry all equipment before reusing.

SHELF LIFE:

This product is best if used within 12 months from manufacture (refer to batch number), when stored in unopened containers under normal conditions of temperature and humidity.

COVERAGE:

10-12m² per litre.

IMPORTANT NOTICE:

MODIFIED OIL GLOSS is prone to ‘skinning’, therefore if applying a partly used drum, it may be necessary to strain the MODIFIED OIL GLOSS through a stocking.

MAINTENANCE:

MODIFIED OIL GLOSS has wearing properties at least equivalent to all other oil based floor coatings. However, in most situations a sacrificial wear surface, i.e. a polish is required to take the brunt of the traffic. Suitable polishes are: Johnsons One Go, Reckitts Long Life, or Peerless Gemini. All these are water based and easily applied with a foam applicator. Polish should be applied after allowing at least seven to ten days for the MODIFIED OIL GLOSS to cure, avoid heavy traffic during this period.  Use protective pads under legs of furniture.

Regularly wipe over the floor with an antistatic mop or sweep with a soft bristle broom.  We caution against the use of vacuum cleaners, particularly if the bristles are worn as the cleaning head may then scratch the floor.  The frequency of cleaning is dependent on the level of traffic, amount of grit carried onto the floor, and activity of children, and pets etc.

To clean your floor, mix up to one cup of Methylated Spirits into a bucket of hot water, and mop the floor, regularly rinsing the mop.  If the floor is particularly dirty, wash first with a non abrasive detergent then clean with the Methylated spirits and water solution – this will prevent streaking and smear marks that sometimes remain after use of detergents and/or household cleaners.

RECOATING:

Before recoating all residual polish must be completely removed.  Refer to the polish manufacturers recommendations for the correct method of removal.  The removal of wax polish is more difficult than water based polishes and requires repeated washes with Mineral Turpentine, or in extreme cases sanding back to bare timber.

SAFETY DIRECTIONS:

Usage of this material must be under well ventilated conditions to minimise inhalation of vapours. Wear respirator with filters that conform with AS1716. Asthmatics, the very young, elderly people and pets should leave the site during the first 24 hours. Prevent skin contact by wearing impervious gloves. Breathing of vapour may be harmful and may cause lung irritation and allergic respiratory reaction. May irritate skin and eyes. Keep container firmly lidded, as this product will skin and slowly cure when exposed to air. In case of spillage, absorb into dry sand or dirt. Remove from work area and cover with water for 24 hours prior to disposal.

WARNING FLAMMABLE:

Contains 80gms per litre of Aromatic Hydrocarbons. This drum contains volatile and flammable solvents and when using contents adequate ventilation to the outside must be provided. All potential sources of ignition (open flames, pilot lights, furnaces, spark producing electrical switches, etc.) must be eliminated in or near the working area. DO NOT SMOKE. Keep drum closed when not in use.

FIRST AID:

If affected by inhalation of vapour, remove to fresh air. If breathing difficulty persists or occurs later, consult a doctor and have label ready. If swallowed, do NOT induce vomiting. Give water or milk.

CONTACT DOCTOR OR POISONS INFORMATION CENTRE Australia 131126.

In case of eye contact, flush immediately with water for fifteen minutes and call a doctor. In case of skin contact, remove contaminated clothing and wash skin first with Methylated spirit, then with soap and water.
